Just like people, horses and dogs need healthy oils in their diet — but what kind of oil is best, and why does it matter?

Every cell membrane in a living creature’s body is made up of oils and fats, known as essential fatty acids (EFAs). The two main types are omega-6 and omega-3, and maintaining the right balance between them is key to good health.

A horse’s natural diet provides nearly equal levels of omega-6 and omega-3. However, many modern feeds and supplements — particularly those designed to add weight or condition — are made with vegetable oils high in omega-6, such as sunflower, rapeseed, and corn oil.

When the diet becomes too rich in omega-6, the body produces more pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, while omega-3 is responsible for creating anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. This imbalance can lead to inflammation, affecting joints, muscles, and overall well-being.

Over time, this can contribute to issues such as stiffness, swollen joints, and even arthritis — in horses, dogs, and humans alike.

By restoring this natural balance with omega-3-rich linseed oil, you can support healthy joints, reduce inflammation, and promote vitality in both people and pets.
